The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is a legal requirement. It is an annual inspection that takes place from the third anniversary of your vehicleās registration. An MOT checks that your vehicle is legal to drive and meets environmental and road safety standards.
Your MOT is due annually, from the third anniversary of your vehicleās registration. You can book your test within a month of its expiry date.
It is illegal to drive without a valid MOT so if yours has expired, do not drive again until your vehicle has passed its MOT. You can be fined up to Ā£1000 if caught driving without an MOT, and it will invalidate your insurance.
An MOT checks various car parts, from the brakes and fuel system to the seatbelts, wipers, mirrors, lights and the exhaust. Most vehicles also have their exhaust emissions tested. The engine, gearbox and clutch are not covered by the MOT.
You will get a āRefusal of MOT certificateā with a list of faults and advisories to fix, and the faults must be fixed before you get retested. You should not drive your car if it fails its MOT, except to a garage to have it repaired and retested.
An MOT takes around 45-60 minutes to complete, assuming everything is ok. If you need to have faults fixed and the test retaken, expect it to take longer, depending on the issues.
