Commons Signs Brake Pads Need Replacing

If you drive a modern car, you may have brake pad sensors that will warn you when the pads are wearing low. Or your brake pads will have indicators built in that squeal when they need replacing. Other signs to look out for are:

  • Screeching: this means the brake pad indicator is meeting the surface of the brake disc, which could be a worn brake pad or because something is stuck between the two parts.
  • Scraping: similar to above, but where the pad might be completely worn away. This will seriously compromise your ability to brake so get this checked out immediately.
  • Vibrating steering wheel: if the brake pad is excessively worn, you may feel a vibration through the steering wheel.
  • Longer braking time: this could indicate a number of problems with your braking system, including worn pads.
